Ducati created quite a stir when it launched the Monster 795 motorcycle last month at 6.99 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi, only to drop prices to INR 5.99 lakhs, within hours of the first price announcement. Ducati though, added a rider with the new dropped price tag of INR 5.99 lakhs, calling the price an introductory one and subject to change in due course of time. Change it will, once Ducati manages to find buyers for the first 300 units of the Monster 795.
So effectively, the killer price tag of INR 5.99 lakhs is only for the first 300 Monster 795 motorcycles, after which the higher price of INR 6.99 lakhs will kick in.
This information was conveyed to Team ICB by an Indian Ducati dealer who added that the Monster 795 is seeing a lot of interest after the cut price model was launched last month. The Ducati Monster 795 is imported into India as a completely built(CBU) unit from Thailand, a country with which India shares a free trade agreement.
The Indo-Thai FTA means that automobiles can be imported from Thailand by paying a import duty of 20%, a big drop from the 60% duty that otherwise has to be paid when importing automobiles into the country as a completely built unit. Effectively, the 20% import duty on the Monster 795 is even lesser than importing the motorcycle in the form of completely knocked down(CKD) kits, a route which commands 30% import duty if the engine and transmission isn’t assembled in India.
The Monster 795 uses the chassis of the older Monster 696, which also comes with the cheaper double sided swing arm. The Monster 795 also has a shorter ride height and a raised handlebar to suit the smaller build of Asian motorcyclists and make long distance riding more comfortable with a more relaxed riding position. The engine though remains the tried and tested L-Twin air cooled motor pumping out 87 Bhp of peak power and 78 Nm of peak torque.
This engine is fed petrol through an electronic fuel injection system and is mated to a six speed manual gearbox. The Ducati Monster 795 is assembled at Thailand, with parts from Ducati’s manufacturing unit at Bologna, Italy. Some parts have also been sourced from other countries of the world including India, in a bid to keep costs low which Ducati hopes will make the Monster 795 more accessible to a wider section of motorcyclists in emerging markets.
