Piaggio Brings Back Vespa showcases Moto Guzzi Norge 1200 GT, Piaggio MP3 Hybrid.

Piaggio has recengtly unveiled the iconic italian scooter ‘Vespa’ during the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo. Vespa is making an entry back into India after a 13 years gap. Globally the Vespa has become a cult and has a massive following. Piaggio will be hoping the re-entry of Vespa into India will be received well. The company has confirmed the Vespa will be slotted as a premium scooter.

High Points:

- Piaggio India unveiled the retro-styled Vespa at the Auto Expo 2012. The Vespa was the world's first scooter & is presently sold in more than 100 countries.

- It might be recollected that Bajaj & LML have previously manufactured the Vespa in India (at different points in time).

- The Vespa LX125 has a four stroke 124cc engine & an automatic transmission. No manual tranny on offer, nor does the front have telescopic forks. Electric start is standard. Kerb weight = 110 kilos.

- There is an under-seat storage compartment, as well as another storage spot behind the leg shield.

- The Vespa will be positioned as a premium scooter in India. Price premium will be more than "Rs. 4,000 - 5,000" over the competition. Other players in the 125 cc scooter segment include the Mahindra Duro & Suzuki Access.

- Piaggio will offer a long list of accessories at its showrooms. Apparently, it will be possible to heavily customise your Vespa.

- The first year's sales target is 30,000 units.

- Piaggio's Baramati factory will make the Vespa. The plant has an initial capacity of 150,000. The Vespa will hit Indian roads in the March - April 2012 period.

- Dealer roll out in 35 cities. Existing Piaggio dealers will be part of the Vespa network, but only via new, dedicated Vespa sales outlets.

Moto Guzzi Norge 1200 GT

Powered by the Moto Guzzi 90 degree V Twin with four valves, the Norge 1200 GT is one tourer we all would love to have in our garage. The full fairing incorporates leg shields at the front and splash guards at the rear, making riding through the rains a tad easier. Norge 1200 GT is also fitted with heated grips that offer you a choice of three temperature settings. The windshield can be manually adjusted. The powerful headlight cluster features four polyelliptical units for excellent visibility, says Moto Guzzi.

The Norge derives its name from the original GT Norge famous for making a 4000 mile test ride in 1928 from the company headquarters in Italy to just inside the Arctic Circle of Norway’s Capo Nord, so as to prove a suspension prototype: the world’s first rear swingarm suspension.

The Guzzi also features the signature Compact Reactive Shaft Drive (CA.R.C.), a Moto Guzzi innovation that offsets the ‘shaft jacking’ effect associated with powerful motorcycles that have shaft drive.

Piaggio MP3 Hybrid

The Piaggio MP3 hybrid is powered by a 278cc internal combustion engine with a hybrid powertrain power of 25hp at 7500 rpm and a torque of 27.5 Nm @ 3500 rpm. If this MP3 Hybrid is anything like its predecessor, then it should be able to ride in reverse, thanks to the electric motor!

The Piaggio MP3 hybrid also stakes claim to being the first electric vehicle to have Lithium Ion batteries.
